Cloud Migration

Cloud Migration by SCS Synergy

Project Overview

Pelita Manufacturing Berhad, a Selangor-based precision engineering company with operations spanning Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, engaged SCS Synergy to migrate their entire on-premises IT infrastructure to the cloud. With over 120 employees relying on legacy servers for ERP, document management, and communications systems, the migration needed to be executed with zero disruption to manufacturing operations that run around the clock.

Our cloud architecture team designed a phased migration strategy utilising Amazon Web Services, selected for its extensive presence in the Asia-Pacific region with data centres in Singapore and upcoming availability zones in Malaysia. The architecture follows a hybrid approach during the transition period, with a dedicated VPN tunnel connecting on-premises systems to cloud resources to ensure seamless operation throughout each migration phase.

Beyond simple lift-and-shift, we re-architected several critical systems to take advantage of cloud-native services. The company's custom ERP modules were containerised using Docker and deployed on Amazon ECS with auto-scaling policies that adjust compute resources based on production schedules. Their document management system was migrated to a serverless architecture using S3, Lambda, and OpenSearch, reducing storage costs by 60% while improving search performance.

The project included comprehensive disaster recovery planning with automated backups, cross-region replication for critical data, and a tested failover procedure that can restore operations within 15 minutes. We also implemented Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, enabling the client's IT team to manage and replicate environments with confidence.

The Challenge

Pelita's existing infrastructure comprised 14 physical servers, some over eight years old, running a mix of Windows Server and CentOS. The company had experienced three significant outages in the preceding 12 months, including a 36-hour downtime event caused by a RAID controller failure that resulted in estimated production losses of RM 500,000. Their backup system relied on manual tape rotations, and recovery testing had never been performed.

The manufacturing environment presented unique challenges: production line monitoring systems required sub-100ms latency for real-time quality control, and regulatory compliance under ISO 27001 and Malaysia's PDPA demanded strict data residency and access controls. Additionally, the IT team of just three people needed a solution they could manage without requiring specialised cloud certifications, making operational simplicity a critical requirement.

Our Solution

SCS Synergy conducted a thorough infrastructure assessment over two weeks, cataloguing all workloads, dependencies, and performance requirements. We classified each system using the 6Rs framework (Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Repurchase, Retire, Retain) and developed a migration roadmap consisting of four phases executed over 14 weeks.

Phase one migrated non-critical systems including email (to Amazon WorkMail) and file storage (to S3 with CloudFront). Phase two tackled the ERP system, which was containerised and deployed behind an Application Load Balancer with health checks and automatic failover. Phase three addressed the production monitoring systems, where we implemented AWS IoT Core with edge computing capabilities using AWS Greengrass to maintain sub-50ms response times for real-time quality control data.

We built a comprehensive monitoring dashboard using CloudWatch and Grafana, providing real-time visibility into system health, cost tracking, and security events. Automated alerts notify the IT team of anomalies before they impact operations. For compliance, we implemented AWS Config rules that continuously audit the infrastructure against ISO 27001 controls, with automated remediation for common misconfigurations.
