Project Overview
Warisan Retail Group, one of Malaysia's fastest-growing multi-brand retailers, approached SCS Synergy to replace their outdated e-commerce infrastructure with a modern, scalable platform capable of supporting their ambitious expansion plans across Southeast Asia. The existing system suffered from slow page loads, a fragmented checkout process, and an inability to handle traffic spikes during festive sales periods such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.
Our team designed and developed a fully custom e-commerce solution built on a headless architecture, decoupling the storefront from backend services to deliver lightning-fast page rendering and maximum flexibility. The platform supports multiple storefronts under a single admin panel, enabling Warisan to manage their diverse brand portfolio efficiently while maintaining consistent inventory and pricing across all channels.
We integrated advanced personalisation features powered by machine learning, delivering product recommendations tailored to individual browsing and purchase history. The platform also includes a robust promotions engine, real-time inventory synchronisation with physical stores, and a streamlined checkout flow optimised for mobile-first users who represent over 70% of Warisan's customer base.
The project was delivered in three phases over six months, with each release undergoing rigorous load testing to ensure the platform could handle up to 50,000 concurrent users during peak shopping events. Post-launch, we continue to provide ongoing support and iterative enhancements based on customer behaviour analytics.
The Challenge
Warisan Retail Group's legacy e-commerce system was built on a monolithic PHP framework that had become increasingly difficult to maintain and scale. During their annual mega-sale campaigns, the platform regularly experienced downtime, resulting in estimated revenue losses exceeding RM 2 million per event. The checkout abandonment rate stood at 68%, largely due to a cumbersome multi-page flow that required users to navigate through seven separate steps to complete a purchase.
Additionally, their product catalogue of over 15,000 SKUs across multiple brands had no centralised management system, forcing staff to update inventory manually across disparate platforms. This led to frequent overselling and customer dissatisfaction. The client needed a solution that could unify their online and offline operations while providing a seamless shopping experience.
Our Solution
SCS Synergy implemented a headless commerce architecture using Next.js for the storefront and a Node.js microservices backend, connected via GraphQL APIs. This approach allowed us to deliver sub-second page loads through static generation and incremental regeneration, while maintaining real-time data accuracy for inventory and pricing.
We built a single-page checkout experience that reduced the purchase flow from seven steps to three, with support for popular Malaysian payment methods including FPX, GrabPay, Touch 'n Go eWallet, and traditional credit card processing via Stripe. The promotions engine supports complex discount rules including tiered pricing, bundle deals, and time-limited flash sales with automatic inventory holds.
For inventory management, we developed a centralised dashboard that synchronises stock levels in real time between the e-commerce platform, physical POS systems, and warehouse management software. The system uses event-driven architecture with message queues to ensure data consistency even during high-traffic periods.
